STEM Concept: Engineering Design
Developing and Optimizing Design Solutions
This Storytime STEM-Pack includes all the materials you need to engage kids in an engineering design task that also explores the concept of properties of matter. The activity is launched by reading the popular children's book On the Construction Site with them, and challenges the children to build a house, solving the problem, to provide shelter for a bear family, using appropriate building materials. Included in this set, you'll find:
- Detailed instructions (i.e., lesson plan) for the learning activities
- House making materials for eight groups of three kids (construction paper, aluminum foil, plastic sheeting, tissue paper, masking tape)
- Bears (18 bears total, size and color vary)
- Word wall cards to use in context
- A copy of On the Construction Site by Carron Brown
The entire activity takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. This STEM-Pack is suitable for grades PreK-2.
